In Response to the 09/25/25 Presidential Memo

On Thursday, September 25th, the White House issued a presidential memo addressing the investigation of political violence.

Political violence has no place in Nebraska nor in our democracy.

Our own staff has experienced doxxing as a result of our work and we’ve dealt with community events being threatened and harassed. Our hearts go out to our sister orgs who have repeatedly dealt with this and worse. Our neighbors to the North, in Minnesota, have seen progressive politicians assassinated. This kind of violence makes all of us less safe.

OutNebraska takes violence seriously, and we firmly condemn it.

However, the memo released by this administration is focused on investigations of their political adversaries. Worded in broad language and directing far-reaching agencies, this memo raises concerns from many organizations and communities as to how it will be used.

This memo comes at a time when many communities – including ours – have been targeted by ongoing harmful rhetoric and actions. Rhetoric and actions aimed at keeping us from participating in civic life in our communities and in Nebraska as a whole.

They are causing real fear for many in our communities.

We want to reassure our community that an executive memo does not change the law and the Constitution. There are a number of organizations monitoring developments and working to ensure our rights are protected.

OutNebraska is deeply committed to our shared democracy and our fundamental constitutional rights: due process; a fair and impartial rule of law, and the vital freedoms of speech, press, and assembly.

OutNebraska remains committed to our mission and vision now more than ever – a Nebraska that embraces and celebrates the full spectrum of LGBTQ+ people.

With our partners, we remain committed to our work and to each other. We believe deeply in our shared commitments to a free and fair democracy that includes all of us. We’ll keep working toward this in every way we can.

Be kind to yourself and to one another, be safe, and stay engaged.
