OutNebraska Responds to Bellevue Public Schools’ New Guidelines regarding  Transgender Students

LINCOLN, NE – In response to Bellevue Public Schools New guidelines directed towards transgender students, OutNebraska executive  director Abbi Swatsworth issued the following statement:

“Students deserve to feel safe, protected and celebrated in schools. In the rapidly changing world we live in, students should feel safe with their teachers and in spaces at school to live and express themselves freely to reach their full potential.

We are deeply saddened and alarmed by the Bellevue Public School Board’s decision to implement harmful policy changes that requires students to use restrooms and locker rooms based solely on their sex assigned at birth and allow school staff to share a student’s gender identity with their parents without the student’s consent.

These changes are not only invasive — they are dangerous. These new guidelines place students at risk

Every child in Nebraska — including transgender and nonbinary youth — deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported at school. We should be creating environments that affirm all students and safeguard their mental health and well-being.

OutNebraska stands in solidarity with the transgender students and families impacted by these harmful guidelines. We will continue to advocate for inclusive, evidence-based policies that protect the rights and dignity of all LGBTQ+ youth across our state.”
