Nebraska’s Kids Deserve Better Than This
Right now, petition circulators are gathering signatures across Nebraska for a ballot initiative called “Fairness for Girls,” backed by Nebraska Family Alliance and former Senator Julie Slama. If enough signatures are collected by July 2026, this initiative could appear on the November ballot and permanently write a ban on transgender students participating in school sports into our state constitution.
OutNebraska strongly opposes this effort, and we’re asking Nebraskans to decline to sign.
School sports matter. Through athletics, young people build confidence, learn teamwork, and find their place among their peers. Transgender students, like every student, deserve that experience. They want to join a team, challenge themselves, and belong to something bigger than themselves. That’s not controversial. That’s childhood.
Remember LB89 from Nebraska’s 2025 Legislative Session? In the same way that law has done real damage to transgender youth in sports, their friends, coaches, and even girls who simply don’t look “feminine enough” in someone else’s eyes, this ballot initiative would double down on that impact. It would take that harm further by embedding exclusion permanently into our state’s highest law, where it would be far harder to undo.
A constitutional amendment is not a policy debate. It’s a lasting decision. And well-funded campaigns like this one are hard to stop at the signature stage.
That’s why we’re focused on what we can actually do right now. OutNebraska is not giving up, and we don’t want you to either. The most powerful thing any of us can do in this moment is make sure our communities are ready to fight this at the ballot box if it gets there, and to make our voices heard before it does.
