LINCOLN, Neb. – In response to Gov. Jim Pillen signing LB 89 into law, OutNebraska Executive Director Abbi Swatsworth issued the following statement:
We are disappointed by the signing of LB 89, a transgender youth sports ban, into law today. Our hearts break for the young children and families who are celebrating Pride this month while also grappling with the reality of this harmful legislation.
The enforcement of LB 89 remains uncertain, OutNebraska is committed to following and supporting our community in this unclear time.
Despite this harmful legislation, we stand together stronger this Pride. To the youth and their families who are struggling: We are with you. We will continue fighting this fight because you belong—yesterday, today and always. Trans people are brilliant, beautiful and resilient, and they belong here in our state.
We encourage everyone to stay active and engaged with our community as we navigate what this law means for Nebraska’s transgender and nonbinary students.
We recognize how harmful this legislative process has been, particularly for transgender Nebraskans. We see you, we hear you, and we are with you.
