LINCOLN, NEB – In response to today’s advancement of LB730, OutNebraska Interim Executive Director AT Miller issued the following statement:
The fight continues as this dangerous bill moves to General File. To be clear, LB730 is a step backwards for all Nebraskans.
LB730 forces the policing of everyone’s bodies in public schools and state buildings. By restricting access to bathrooms and locker rooms, this bill isolates transgender youth and adults from participating in public life. It creates confusion and fear for transgender people, their families, educators, and administrators trying to create safe environments.
LB730 presents restrictions, but it is unclear regarding their enforcement. This puts all Nebraskans in a position to be targeted and harassed needlessly. LB730 is blatant government overreach.
We want to recognize the powerful coalition that showed up to oppose this bill. We heard you when you testified. And we thank you for the comments you submitted. Your presence demanded that transgender stories, as well as ally stories, be heard. We especially want to thank the senators who stood with us by voting against LB730.
We have defeated harmful bills before, and we will defeat this one, too. It will take all of us reaching out to the people who care about us and the causes we support, as well as talking directly to our senators, to defeat this bill.
We want to take a moment to say to transgender Nebraskans: Your experiences are valid. Your bodies are not a problem. You belong here just as much as anyone else. Your life holds value, now and always.
