For over 100 years, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has worked relentlessly to save lives and create a world with less cancer. Together with millions of our supporters worldwide, we help people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has embraced the achievement of equity in cancer-related health outcomes as a foundational principle. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals experience health disparities related to certain risk factors for cancer and in certain cancer outcomes. Accordingly, the ACS is defining a new program of work in partnership with the LGBT community to help understand and reduce disparities in cancer risk factors and outcomes.

The American Cancer Society believes all individualsóregardless of race, socioeconomic, sexual orientation, and insurance status ó deserve equal access to quality health care. An article outlining these goals as they pertain to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community appeared in a recent issue of LGBT Health, a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to promoting optimal healthcare for millions of sexual and gender minority persons worldwide. It was written by Rich Wender, MD, our chief cancer control officer; Katherine Sharpe, senior VP, patient and caregiver support; J. Lee Westmaas, PhD, strategic director, tobacco control research; and Alpa Patel, PhD, strategic director, CPS-3. (
