LINCOLN, NE – After the Nebraska legislature failed to override Governor Jim Pillen’s veto on LB 307, Community Organizer Aryn Huck issued the following statement on behalf of OutNebraska:
After initially seeing such strong bipartisan support for LB 307, we are disappointed that such a crucial public health effort has been stalled by misinformation and stigma against those living with HIV and substance use issues.
We know that gay and transgender people, particularly those of color, are more likely to be impacted by HIV, hepatitis and other blood-borne illnesses. The practices and services outlined in LB 307 could have been a powerful step toward remedying those and other health disparities in Nebraska.
At this time, we encourage the public to seek out information from credible sources like the Nebraska AIDS Project and the Center for Disease Control to learn more about the community health benefits of Syringe Services Programs.
