OutNebraska Executive Director Abbi Swatsworth issued the following statement in response to to the extension, which expires at the end of March:
“Given the amount of input provided by affected families and experts throughout this process, we are hopeful that this extension means the DHHS is taking the community’s feedback into account.
Still, the last year has revealed a lack of institutional transparency, exacerbating a period of deep uncertainty for many young transgender Nebraskans and their families.
Transgender youth and their mental health are a top priority for our organization and it is necessary to emphasize how this lack of stability surrounding access to medically necessary care has impacted them over the last year, regardless of the outcome.
